Food Trip No.2

My foundation program's over and now i'm at the foot of the hill of my four month holidays.

A few days after the exams ended, I explored Penang Island and enjoyed its wonderful food. Apparently Gurney Drive is a tourist trap, where the food does not live up to its true name. I tried the Kueytiaw at Gurney and another where my local friend recommended. Eating second-rate kueytiaws all my life, i would say both kueytiaws were wonderful, yet the one which my friend advocated had a better texture and taste. Thus began my journey of gluttony.

Penang, land of good food

The popiah at the local area won over the popiah at Gurney hands down. The victor had warm filling which consisted of veggies and crab meat wrapped in a thin popiah skin, chewy, tasty, and ready to be gulp in bulks. God, I feel like going back to penang for it again.

Next was the mee goreng mamak at Lorong Bangkok. Apparently the mee goreng was orange in color because of the mysterious sauce. The sauce had a scent of sweet, sour and spiciness, where non had dominated each other to the extent of making the others mild, but they were all balanced to the point that all that mattered was eating noodle with the sauce, something like spaghetti and its sauce.

Moving onwards, the famous Penang Road Cendol. Thanks to Tim's and Wei Han's ability to recall the place, we were able to find the place within the intersections and criss-crosses of lorongs. Loads of people were gathered around the stall. There was also an enlarged photo of Phua Chu Kang and his wife happily eating the stall's cendol. As I sank my teeth down the contents of my bowl, most of the ingredients were normal, but the cendoi (green long strips found in cendol) was the real deal, smooth and refined, unlike any other normal cendol store. Overall, the cendoi made the cendol experience a fabulous one. Apparently, there's a duplicate stall set up opposite of the original stall with the same name, but all the locals know better. (A good way to tell is that the fake stall has no customers.)

At night, Yik Foong's generous uncle brought us to "X-Planet"(I'm not sure how it's spelled but it was pronounced someway along these lines), somewhere near the coast for a seafood dinner. There was "La-La"(sea oysters) and grilled fish with beers. Overall it was a delicious dinner of sauces, can't say there was anything special with the taste of the food.

On another morning, the star was the early "Nyonya Kari Mee" or Nyonya curry mee breakfast at "Air Itam", a large market place. It was spicy but had a more distinct sour taste to it, along with a leafy fragrance. Giving the whole bowl of noodles and meat such an aura of tastiness, the whole breakfast was delightful, with an additional serving of kueytiaw again.

There you have it, our other meals were made up of steamboats or nasi kandars which were more commonly found and less significant. Concerning the tourist sites such as temples and monuments, they weren't much intriguing and lost my interests quickly. ("Snake temple" had like a few snakes inside a fish tank, that's all.)
